Operator Challenge 2025

STET brought together in Maia the talent and precision of the Best Operators at the controls of CAT® machines.

On May 31, at STET’s facilities in Maia, the national phase of the Global Operator Challenge 2025 took place, an event that brought together talent, technical precision, and team spirit.

STET – Caterpillar’s official representative in Portugal – opened the doors of its Maia branch to host the first phase of the Global Operator Challenge 2025, part of a global competition launched by Caterpillar®.

Throughout the event, operators faced three tests designed to put different technical skills to the test, such as excavation, load capacity, and the versatility of CAT® equipment.

THE CHALLENGES

Efficient Loading Challenge: CAT® 950

During the morning, the first two challenges took place simultaneously. On the circuit with the CAT 950 Wheel Loader, operators completed two laps and transported material using the CAT® Payload system. In addition to loading accuracy, the course included obstacles that tested control, safety, and fluidity of operation.

Operational Versatility Challenge: CAT® 428

At the same time, in the CAT 428 Backhoe Loader challenge, participants demonstrated skill and coordination. The exercise began with moving a metal beam along a narrow path with stacked drums, which could not be knocked over, followed by a precision phase with the backhoe arm, where the goal was to knock over two balls without affecting the supports. This test required balance, attention to detail, and total mastery of the machine.

Precision Excavation Challenge: CAT® 323

The third and final challenge took place in the afternoon, with the CAT 323 Excavator. Each operator dug a trench using the machine’s integrated 2D system. The evaluation focused on the accuracy of the measurements, the careful deposition of the material, and the technique applied throughout the operation.

More than just rewarding speed, the tests valued the precision, safety, and experience of those who operate machines in the field with professionalism.

In addition to the challenges, the day was marked by interaction between operators, colleagues, the STET team, and visitors. It was a relaxed atmosphere, where experiences, stories, and a shared passion for the world of machines were shared.

One of the special moments of the event was the exhibition of the centenary edition of the CAT® 432 machine — a model commemorating 100 years of innovation by the Caterpillar brand, which aroused great interest among operators and visitors.

THE BIG WINNER

Among the 20 participants, the highlight was Mr. José Oliveira, who won first place in the national phase and will represent Portugal in the semifinals of the Global Operator Challenge, proving himself to be the operator with the fastest and most efficient operating skills.

With this initiative, STET reinforces its commitment to valuing operators, promoting professional excellence and continuous development in the heavy machinery sector. The next stage will take national talent to the European stage, and STET will be there, as always, supporting those who build the future.
